Atlantic Credit Unions Golf Tournament a Big Hit for O’Leary-Based Community Inclusions

2012_Golf_Cover_Pic_revCharlottetown, PE (April 2013) – On behalf of all the credit unions in Atlantic Canada, Évangéline-Central Credit Union and Tignish Credit Union hosted the highly successful 2012 Atlantic Credit Unions Golf Tournament. The tournament took place on September 14th at the Mill River Resort and Golf Course in Mill River, PEI.

The tournament organizing committee was comprised of Sheila-May Muttart and Maxine Ellis of Évangéline-Central Credit Union, and Jarret O’Rourke and Arlene Hackett of Tignish Credit Union. “It was quite something to organize an event of this size, but was well worth the effort to see it all come together,” says Maxine Ellis, head of the organizing committee. “Looking back, it took about 175 hours to pull it all together.”

The tournament was a big success in the eyes of the organizing committee, raising $7,372.67 for Community Inclusions, which is based out of O’Leary, PEI. Community Inclusions is a not-for-profit organization in western PEI providing residential, outreach and employment services to adults with intellectual disabilities. “I didn’t expect the amount that we received, we’re grateful for any amount,” says Kevin Porter, Executive Director for Community Inclusions. “With the extra dollars here, we’ll be able to do a little more than we thought…which is huge.” You can watch more of what Kevin had to say here.

In total, the tournament saw 110 participants organized into 20 teams, representing 35 different organizations including credit unions, centrals and other co-operatives, along with various other supporting organizations. The organizing committee estimates that during the course of the tournament, the teams went through 246 golf balls, 82 apples, and each burned roughly 1,200 calories.

The committee would like to extend their congratulations to the winning team, which was comprised of Marc LeClair, David Black, and Steve Mills. You can watch some of the highlights of the day here.

The Atlantic Credit Unions Golf Tournament is an annual event co-ordinated and sponsored by credit unions from all four Atlantic Provinces. The tournament location moves from province to province each year with a hosting credit union(s) taking the lead to organize, plan and implement the event. In exchange for the responsibility of putting on the tournament, the host credit union selects a local beneficiary, either an organization or charity, as the recipient of the tournament’s proceeds. In September, 2013, the annual tournament will be held in New Brunswick with Progressive Credit Union hosting the event.

Évangéline-Central Credit Union and Tignish Credit Union service the financial needs of the western half of Prince County in Prince Edward Island through a total of five full service branch locations in Wellington, Tyne Valley, and O’Leary and Tignish and Alberton respectively. Combined, the two credit unions have over $240 Million in assets and service over 17,700 Members.
