Ms. Gouthro stated that these are indeed impressive numbers, considering today’s economic circumstances, and attributed the credit union’s successes to the independent nature of the operation which is part of the co-operative business model for all credit unions. Dominion Credit Union’s board, management and staff pride themselves on the care they give to their members and their community.

Mark Sparrow, Business Development Officer for the Nova Scotia Co-operative Council, said a successful 2011 for the Dominion Credit Union shows area residents are supporting this local, member-owned business.

“There are dozens of community-owned credit unions across Nova Scotia and if these organizations did not exist in these communities, people would have to travel further to deal with one of the competing financial institutions,” Sparrow said in an interview.

He said the United Nations has declared 2012 the International Year of Co-operatives.
