Heritage Credit Union Wins the 2011 Leadership in Co-operative Governance Award

February 11, 2011 Halifax, NS – Heritage Credit Union was acknowledged with the 2011 Leadership in Co-operative Governance Award, presented by the Canadian Co-operative Association (CCA) to honour co-operatives and credit unions that demonstrate excellence in board governance. The award was presented to the Chair of Heritage’s Board of Directors, Mr. John Peach, at the Institute of Cooperative Leadership Conference held yesterday in Toronto.

In choosing Heritage for the award, the adjudicators commended Heritage’s Board for its effective implementation of a board training program to effect cultural change in the organization. The desire was to move from an operational and micro-managed approach to a policy and governance approach. While many boards have implemented governance training, this board did so with a clear purpose of transformation and cultural change. The adjudicator panel further recognized Heritage for its measurable results directly attributed to the training; board renewal, business growth, better decision making, and ability to attract human resources and improved customer satisfaction ratings.

“We’re extremely pleased by this accomplishment, said Chair John Peach after receiving the award on behalf of the Heritage Board. Our members benefit from the level of commitment recognized in this award. Being a leader in cooperative governance demonstrates our values as an organization.” “It is particularly affirming to be recognized by the lead organization for the co-operative movement – a movement whose principles we strive constantly to embody and uphold.”
