IYC Flag Flies at Miramichi City Hall During Co-op Week
Representatives from four Miramichi Co-operatives: Beaubear Credit Union, Beaubear Co-op, Northumberland Dairy Co-operative, Co-operators Insurance and Amanda Hachey, from the Co-operative Enterprise Council of New Brunswick joined City of Miramichi Mayor, Gerry Cormier, on a cool, misty Monday morning to raise the International Year of Co-operatives flag for Co-op week. The flag flew in front of City Hall for the duration of Co-op Week (October 14 to 20). This is one of three joint initiatives that the Miramichi Co-operatives participated in to bring awareness to 2012 International Year of Co-operatives.
In June, Miramichi co-operatives established a one-time scholarship. The scholarship was open to any high school graduate who was a member, or a child of a member of a Miramichi co-operative. The applicant was required to complete a short essay on how one of the seven co-operative principles applies to them. The recipient of the $1,000 scholarship was Ransen Harris, a graduate of James M Hill Memorial High School.
Canada Day in Miramichi is a time of community celebration and a great time to celebrate International Year of Co-operatives. The Miramichi co-operatives joined the parade, a long-standing tradition on Canada Day. A float was decorated; participants wore IYC t-shirts and handed out candy and IYC tattoos to the hundreds of people, young and old, that lined the parade route.
Co-operatives of the Miramichi are proud of the success and awareness that was achieved through the International Year of Co-operative activities.
