Shave for the Brave
Young Adult Cancer Canada (YACC) is a non-profit organization that provides information, support and opportunities for young adults who are diagnosed with cancer. People in their twenties and thirties have different experiences than those of other ages, and cancer alters life experience even more. YACC offers different programs to help make these young adults’ lives easier.
Shave for the Brave is a fundraising event where an individual or group raises money for YACC and at the end, one or more of the participants shaves his or her head, or donates ten inches of hair. The money raised enables young adults to participate in YACC programs free of cost.
Paul Paruch, Vice President Business Solutions at Atlantic Central and League Savings Mortgages, made the admirable decision to participate in Shave for the Brave with a fundraising goal of $5,000. On Thursday May 1, 2014 at Atlantic Central in Halifax, Paul had his head shaved. Approximately 70 employees, including those attending via video conference were on hand to encourage and cheer Paul on!
To raise money, an online auction was held where employees could place bids to take the first swipe of the razor to Paul’s head, with bids beginning at $100. Kim Walker, Vice President Treasury and Credit Services, placed the winning bid and did an excellent job transforming Paul’s head to beautifully bald! Other fundraising activities included: jeans week at a cost of $2 per day; Atlantic Central in Halifax held a bake sale on May 1st; the Charlottetown office held a coffee and cupcake sale, and the Riverview office of Atlantic Central and League Savings and Mortgage charged admission for staff to watch the live “shave” event on May 1st. Other events were held at credit unions as well, in support of Paul’s shave.
To encourage donations, Atlantic Central offered a 25 BPS bonus over the one year credit union Term Deposit Rate, with a maximum deposit of $1 million to every credit union that made a donation of $500 or more to YACC. Congratulations are extended to Reddy Kilowatt Credit Union for winning the draw and a big “Thank You” to all credit unions that participated in raising money for this worthwhile organization.
We are pleased to announce that Paul exceeded his goal of $5,000, finishing with a total of more than $6,000 raised in support of YACC. Congratulations to Paul for his successful participation in the Shave for the Brave event and thank you to every credit union and staff member at our three companies who donated time, money and effort in support of Young Adult Cancer Canada!
