Six of the Top 27 Best Places to Work in Atlantic Canada are Credit Unions!
May 28, 2013 (Halifax, NS) – Six of the top 27 Best Places to Work in Atlantic Canada 2013 are Atlantic credit unions, including Metro Credit Union based in Charlottetown, PEI which placed number one on the list prepared annually by Progress magazine. This is the second year in a row that Metro Credit Union has earned top spot thanks to its innovative communications strategy.
“We practice open communication, so employees always feel up-to-date and comfortable giving input,” says Bernard Gillis, the General Manager of Metro Credit Union. “Employees are encouraged to be involved in all aspects of decision-making.”
In addition to Metro Credit Union, other Atlantic credit unions on the list include Leading Edge Credit Union (no. 4); Newfoundland and Labrador Credit Union (no. 7); Bayview Credit Union (no. 13); East Coast Credit Union (no. 22); and Bergengren Credit Union (no. 27). Every Atlantic province is represented among the winners, with the list having been announced on May 21st in Halifax.
Newfoundland and Labrador Credit Union was also named one of Atlantic Canada’s Top Employers for 2013.
A driving factor for this year’s roster of Best Places to Work in Atlantic Canada was finding ways to creating healthy work-life balance for employees. Other themes that came out of this year’s Best Places to Work include:

This is the seventh year in a row that Atlantic credit unions have been recognized in the Best Places to Work in Atlantic Canada.
Atlantic Central President & Chief Executive Officer Michael Leonard offered his congratulations to the credit unions on their recognition. “It is very satisfying to see six of our Atlantic credit unions being recognized in this way and, at the same time, it is not really surprising because of credit unions’ genuine concern and support for the well-being of their staff, members and the communities they serve.”
Atlantic Central is the trade association for the region’s 57 autonomous credit unions, providing financial and other services to credit unions including banking, treasury, payment and settlement systems, research, marketing, corporate governance, consulting services and government relations. Atlantic credit unions jointly own Atlantic Central and twelve representatives from the four provinces sit on its board of directors.
